What do you think of NetApp storage servers?

John773 has the most piercing take on NetApps:

My Netapp clients fall into Three camps.

The first are defense industry engineering offices with people who need granular file level ACL's that work with BOTH unix NFS and Windows NTFS is the first camp. They put up with it because it will actually handle this.

My other two camps are..

Clients who have gross configurations and they run terrible. (think 100 Mbps out of 4 x 1 Gbps)

Clients who know what they could have gotten for their money and want to throw them in dumpsters and do just about anything else.

So my re-statement (and John can correctly me if I'm off) is: You should only use NetApp if you need “granular file level ACLs that work with both Unix NFS an Windows NTFS” and you're willing to put up with the sub-par IOPS/$ or if you have some other political based need (you'll get fired for specifying anything else).
